The Crafting Modernism exhibition at MAD has me so inspired. I’ve been smitten with the textile design of Anni Albers ever since I first saw her work. The textures and color palettes are so beautiful. Some patterns are chunky and rugged while others are smooth and refined. I love them all!
A bit about Anni: She was a student of the Bauhaus and later emigrated to America with her husband Josef, a very well established artist. They both taught at Black Mountain College near Asheville, North Carolina. Her passion for design led her to develop many new weaving techniques and textile patterns. She wrote several essays and books on weaving in addition to exploring printmaking and jewelry design.

We’re going all out for this party- there will be custom window displays out front, a special customized photo backdrop* (designed by Poppies & Posies) to go with the Smilebooth photos you can take, and, last but certainly not least, we’ll be auctioning off West Elm products (furniture & accessories) that have been customized by artists that were featured in the book! The auction will benefit the New York Public Library, the site of our first crafting event. Here are the details below:

Inspired by the article in the New York Times – Seattle, A Tasting Menu – I decided to do my own take on the topic. Below is a sampling of well designed eating and drinking establishments by Graham Baba Architects. They’ve created some super cool spaces using salvaged materials and vintage finds. The result is rustic meets modern with an industrial edge. And the food’s pretty tasty too.
